Cornell, 35, has been without a club since leaving Preston North End at the end of last season. The Welshman made eight Championship appearances for the Lilywhites in 2025/26, keeping one clean sheet.

But now, according to journalist Pete O'Rourke, the Foxes are in discussions with Cornell's representatives about bringing the experienced shot-stopper to King Power Stadium.

A move for Cornell comes after Jakub Stolarczyk suffered an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury during City's 2-0 win over Plymouth Argyle earlier this month. The 25-year-old has since undergone successful surgery and is expected to miss the rest of the season.

Stolarczyk had started the campaign as No.2 but came back into the side after impressing in the Carabao Cup defeat at Ipswich Town and was Martin's first-choice for the trip to MK Dons and home game against Plymouth.

But Alex McCarthy has returned to become Leicester's first-choice 'keeper with Franco Ravizzoli, who joined the Foxes from Blackpool in the summer, acting as his back-up.

McCarthy, 36, helped Leicester keep a clean sheet against Plymouth, but has since conceded SEVEN goals in two matches. The Foxes were beaten 4-0 at home to Oxford United before earning a 4-3 win at Stockport County.

With Stevie Bausor out on loan at National League South side Slough Town, Freddie Marson is next in line to be involved having trained with the first-team in pre-season. Marson, 17, who joined Leicester from Mansfield Town in 2023, has started the last four matches for the Under 21s and has a bright future ahead of him.

But Russell Martin is hoping to get more experience into his goalkeeping group with Cornell targeted as the new third-choice after spending the last four years in the second tier at Preston.

Before that, Cornell had been at Northampton Town, Ipswich Town and Peterborough United. Across his career to date, the former Swansea City trainee has made more than 200 senior appearances.

Cornell had been offered a one-year extension to remain at Preston but decided to depart at the end of his contract in June. He has been waiting for his next move since, and it now appears he could be Leicester-bound.

The Foxes are next in action when they travel to Barnsley in League One on Saturday. They are looking to follow up an impressive win at Stockport, who many have tipped to be challenging for promotion again this season.
