Thursday night saw Villa claim a 3-0 win over Freiburg in the Europa League final, in what was the penultimate game of Elliott’s loan with the Premier League club.

Liverpool loaned Elliott to Villa last summer in a deal that also included a £35million obligation to buy, which was to be activated once the 23-year-old made 10 Premier League appearances.

However, Elliott has made just five appearances in the top flight this season and is expected to return to Liverpool this summer, where he will likely face an uncertain future.

Elliott was an unused substitute in the win in Istanbul on Thursday and went on to post a message on social media to Villa fans.

“Was written in the stars from the moment I signed! Up the f****** Villa,” Elliott posted to his 2.3 million followers on Instagram.

“Played a huge part,” Elliott added, followed by a laughing face emoji and a winking face emoji.

“All jokes aside, Villa fans, thanks so much for everything! Enjoy yourselves.”

The post received more than 230,000 likes, including from Liverpool stars Hugo Ekitike, Curtis Jones, Rio Ngumoha, Andy Robertson, Trey Nyoni, as well as former Reds teammates Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz, Tyler Morton and Kostas Tsimikas.

Elliott also made four appearances for Villa in the Europa League this term on their way to winning the trophy, but did not feature from the quarter-final stage onwards.

Villa boss Unai Emery was asked about Elliott’s future at the club before Liverpool’s 4-2 defeat in the Premier League last week, where he offered his apologies to the Reds loanee.

"It is something embarrassing for everyone involved,” Emery said.

"My apologies for Harvey Elliott is every day in my mind, but it is [about] responsibility; we have our responsibility, and Liverpool have their responsibility. It is something, as a human and as a person, how the season has gone has been difficult."

He added: "To now explain about the reason for this decision is very difficult. Or it is easy, but it is not the moment."
