There is not expected to be any hitches in the appointment, but the process has taken longer than expected and details still need to be ironed out.

Talks are advanced and City hope to conclude the process as quickly as possible ahead of what could be a busy summer with a number of potential transfers - both in and out - along with a World Cup and summer tour of Asia.

Guardiola confirmed his exit in the final week of last season and more than two weeks have passed since. City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak called for patience in his end-of-season address.

He said: "I think what I can say at the moment is we've gone through a very thoughtful and structured process and the team is convinced - and I am convinced, rest assured - that we will bring in the right manager for this club. Just be patient with us. Very soon we'll announce it and you will be very comfortable that we have selected and brought in the best manager possible for this club."

Maresca left Chelsea in January after falling out with the Stamford Bridge hierarchy. He won the Club World Cup and Conference League during his time at the club and Chelsea fell down the table after his departure, eventually missing out in a place in Europe for next season.

The 46-year-old Italian previously spent two years at City, one working in the Academy before a season as Guardiola's assistant in the Treble-winning campaign.

He left in 2023 to become Leicester City manager and guided them into the Premier League before moving to Chelsea. He is held in high regard at the Etihad and many players who worked with him in Manchester were complimentary about his style and man-management.

City are keen to get the managerial appointment resolved to help create a smoother transfer path this summer with the Blues chasing a deal for Nottingham Forest and England midfielder Elliot Anderson.
