Enzo Fernandez scored his first City goal with a direct free-kick that caught the Black Cats goalkeeper Robin Roefs out, and from that point on the game was anything but routine. Bryan Brobbey managed a hat-trick for the visitors, while Antoine Semenyo scored two for City and Rayan Cherki and Erling Haaland also found the net.

It took Haaland's late goal - the eighth of the day - to really settle a contest that had swayed back and forth to leave everyone dizzy. Sunderland hit the post in the 90th minute but couldn't force another goal to make City even more nervy.

Nunes: Left too much space to often between him and Dias and his passing could have been better. 5

Guehi: The best of a bad bunch in defence, and also had a hand in the third City goal with a smart run. 6

Gvardiol: Made some very good clearances but also some lapses in concentration that put City in trouble. 6

Anderson: Lots of running but struggled to give City any control during the game and Sunderland hunted him. 5

Fernandez: Great thinking for the opening goal and kept some discipline in the team. 6

Ndiaye: Brilliant in the first half to swarm Sunderland, albeit faded a little in the second as he tired. 7

Semenyo: Two goals and an assist to quieten worries about his contribution - and win the game. 8

Haaland: Battled gamely all match and finally got his reward when he pounced late on. 7
