In his only season as captain, the Blues won both the FA and Carabao Cups. However, Bernardo's full list of honours, during a nine-year stint at City, included six Premier Leagues, the Champions League, the Club World Cup, three FA Cups, five League Cups and three Community Shields. During his emotional farewell, Bernardo paid tribute to City's fans.

"It is really tough to put into words my feelings for Man City, towards you guys," the 31-year-old said following his last appearance for the Blues against Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium. "I don't think I will feel the same love ever in my life.

"The love I go from you guys, I doubt I will ever get it again. All the memories we have together, with my brothers, it is a family and you will always be my family." Afterwards on social media, Bernardo paid tribute to Pep Guardiola who brought him to City.

"Before I joined the club, Pep was already an inspiration for me," he wrote on Instagram. "To become his player and after nine years end up being the one with most games played under him is truly an honour. He arrived at Man City, and the Premier League couldn’t be dominated playing his way… Well, they were wrong.

"Not only he dominated, he changed the game in England as he did in other countries before. The hunger and ambition to want more and more even after winning and winning again was a big inspiration.

"For me personally, he was and will always be my father of football. A lot of the things that many managers in the past thought were weaknesses of my game, he saw it as strengths and understood me from day one.

"On a personal level, the kindness, trust and respect that we had for each other makes me the proudest and goes beyond football. I couldn’t be more grateful for what he did for me and my family.

"Thank you for all the memories and experiences to the greatest manager ever Pep Guardiola." Bernardo will now work under one of Guardiola's fiercest rivals Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho was confirmed as Real's new head coach recently and has been quick to bolster Los Blancos' squad. Bernardo becomes his latest new signing after Marc Cucurella recently joined from Chelsea.
