Simpson-Pusey spent the second half last season with Koln making 11 appearances. The German outfit, who finished 14th, had an option to make the move permanent and have negotiated a deal with City which will take the 20-year-old to the RheinEnergieStadion from July 1.

City will bank an initial €5.5million from the move while add-ons included could take the final total to €7.5m. City have also inserted a buy-back clause and matching rights into the transfer.

Simpson-Pusey departs having made six senior appearances for the Blues, all in the 2024-25 season. He was a surprise starter in the Champions League defeat to Sporting Lisbon and also featured in the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup.

Pep Guardiola praised the centre back after his Premier League showing at Brighton in 2024 with City calling on the then teenager owing to an injury crisis. Guardiola said: “Jahmai Simpson-Pusey played really good again, with this composure – the duels, everything was good. We have a central defender to help us for the next years.

“I’m really pleased. Always, there is good news when a situation is going bad – and this is one of them. It’s not easy for him.

“Normally, the young lads come in with the support of the team – Rodri in front of them, the best Kyle Walker and other defenders. He’s playing in a position that is difficult for him, and he performed unbelievably.”

Simpson-Pusey starred at academy level that season and was named Premier League 2 Player of the Year for his strong performances at the heart of the City defence while he also lifted the FA Youth Cup in 2024.

He spent the first half of last season on loan at Celtic but the move did not work out. Then boss Brendan Rodgers left him out of the Champions League games and then didn't select him in the Europa League squad. Simpson-Pusey made one league start under Martin O'Neill but didn't feature again before being recalled and moving to Koln.
