Carrick has named a slightly smaller squad this week, with 23 players travelling to Stockholm. JJ Gabriel is once again included and he will hope to make his first appearance for the senior side today.

Here are the starting teams for today's game:

UNITED: Heaton, Yoro, Maguire, Heaven, Shaw, Mount, Santos, Lacey, Amad, Dorgu, Mbeumo.

ATLETICO: Oblak, Domínguez, Le Normand, Hancko, Ruggeri, Koke, Obed Vargas, Castillo, Arnau Ortiz, Carlos Martín, Lookman.

We'll have build-up, live updates and reaction from today's game, so stick with us in the blog below:

New UpdatesKey EventsUnited XIView PostToday12:59 BSTNo Zirkzee a surpriseHard to know how much to read into team selection in pre-season, but something of a surprise to see Zirkzee axed after his goal last week.

His confidence would have been high and it feels like another indication that he just isn’t good enough and isn’t really in Carick’s plans.

Amad straight into the team after only returning to pre-season training earlier this week. Would only expect him to play 45 minutes.

CommentsRoss Jackson‌Today12:43 BSTAn interesting venueThe Strawberry Arena (why on earth is it called that?) is giving me distinct London Stadium vibes outside. There is a Westfield shopping centre basically attached to it and plenty of Scandinavian high street brands to eat and drink at.

A lot of United and Atletico shirts are milling around. One United supporter had a ‘Zirkzee 11’ shirt on. Maybe he got it after that goal against Rosenborg?

CommentsTyrone MarshallToday12:30 BSTNot long nowKick-off at the Strawberry Arena is scheduled for 2pm today, meaning we've only an hour and a half to go before the game begins.

Team news will be along very soon and we'll bring it to you as soon as it lands.

CommentsRoss JacksonToday12:07 BSTJJ Gabriel's big day?Carrick has brought a smaller squad to this game than the fixtures in Helsinki and Trondheim. Strangely it has four goalkeepers in it, so only 19 outfield players. That suggests one player at least will go 90 minutes and we’ll probably see everyone involved. That hints at a first senior appearance for JJ Gabriel and if the 15-year-old does get on, there is going to be a lot of excitement.

CommentsTyrone Marshall‌Today11:41 BSTMemories stirUnited played in this very city and this very stadium just a year ago, which makes the decision to come back a strange one. That was a goalless draw against Leeds, who are opponents again this summer, only this time in Ireland.

United do at least have happier memories of Stockholm, having won the Europa League here in 2017. That game against Ajax was in this stadium but memories of it are tinged by what had happened two days earlier, when Manchester was rocked by a terror attack that killed 22 people. Every time United return here it will stir memories of that week for people that did the trip. United played their part in the tributes back in May 2017.

CommentsTyrone MarshallToday11:29 BSTGreat day for a game of footballIt’s a lovely sunny day in Stockholm and at breakfast this morning I saw a United shirt and an Atletico shirt. But a walk around the picturesque city this morning offered zero clues there was a game on.

Locals and tourists were going about their business and I didn’t see a single sign or mention of the game. The vast majority of blocks in the 50,000 capacity stadium still have tickets available and it could be another relatively small crowd that greets United in pre-season.

CommentsTyrone MarshallToday11:29 BSTPredicted XIBayindir returned to Carrington this week and has made it into the travelling squad. While his future is in doubt, the Reds could look to put him in the shop window against Atletico and he will be expecting to start.

Ahead of him, Carrick will likely persist with playing Yoro at right-back, in the absence of Dalot and Mazraoui.

If Yoro is at full-back, Maguire and Heaven should play in the centre with Shaw in his familiar left-back role. Just ahead of them, it is a chance to see the blossoming partnership of Andrey Santos and Mason Mount against tough opposition.

There's also the latest on Lewis Hall's future, Youri Tielemans' first few training sessions at United and a whole lot more.

CommentsRoss JacksonToday10:25 BSTUnited make decision on French strikerEnzo Kana-Biyik is expected to stay with United this season amid a mass academy loan operation this summer.

However, Kana-Biyik is expected to remain with United in the new campaign as he enters the next stage of his development, which means he will play for the U21s and receive first-team exposure in training sessions.

CommentsRoss JacksonToday10:17 BSTICYMI: Under-21s beaten 1-0 by AltrinchamUnited's Under-21s were beaten by Altrincham in a pre-season friendly last night.

Jimmy Knowles scored the only goal of the game for Altrincham just before half-time.

CommentsRoss Jackson‌Today10:08 BSTHow United should line upOur writers have had their say on how United should line up today:

Tyrone Marshall

It feels like this is about partnerships at the moment for United and I would keep to the script on that front in a lot of positions, although I would give Heaton the start this week. He will be around longer than Vitek.

Yoro has started twice at right-back and it feels like that is worth sticking with, although I would want to see him at centre-back from next week onwards. Being able to do a job at right-back is just a bonus.

Santos and Mount have developed a good understanding in midfield and they can play again and ideally get more than an hour in the tank next to each other. Lacey did a good job as the No.10 last week and deserves another chance to shine in a strong team.

It's too soon for Amad so Mbeumo starts on the right and Dorgu can continue on the left. Zirkzee can go through the middle again in what is the same team that started last week. I'd be bringing JJ Gabriel on for the last 20 minutes at least.

CommentsRoss Jackson‌Today09:51 BSTWelcomeHello and welcome to our live coverage of United's pre-season clash with Atletico Madrid.

Carrick's side flew out to Stockholm yesterday afternoon ahead of their biggest test of pre-season so far. Atletico are one game into their schedule ahead of the new campaign, and they kicked off with a resounding 4-1 win over Getafe in midweek.

Carrick is expected to go strong with his starting XI this afternoon, as he has done in both of United's friendlies so far, as some of the club's senior stars work their way back up to match fitness ahead of the 2026/27 season.

We'll have all the updates you need throughout the day so stick with us.
