The 34-year-old departs upon the expiry of his contract at Old Trafford but his contributions since Michael Carrick's appointment have been key in helping the club back to the Champions League. His final game came in the nail-biting 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest which brought the curtain down on the home campaign for United, in what was a record-equalling afternoon for Bruno Fernandes.

Casemiro had planned to speak to the assembled media after his final performance at Old Trafford, where he received a standing ovation following his substitution, before addressing the crowd with a short message. However, according to the Sun, the Brazilian star was too emotional to conduct the planned post-match press conference.

He followed up with a more detailed address to the United supporters on social media as he called Manchester his 'forever home' after a topsy-turvy 161 appearances that brought two trophies, netting 26 goals.

He said: "There are places we pass through in life… and there are places that become part of who we are. Manchester will forever be my home.

"To the city, the club, and every supporter, my sincerest thank you. These past four years have been unforgettable, filled with moments my family and I will carry with us for the rest of our lives.

"There simply aren’t enough words to describe the happiness and warmth we’ve felt here. Thank you for every cheer, every memory, and for making us feel at home from the very first day. Forever a Red Devil."

In the build-up for Sunday's showdown with Vitor Pereira's side, it was suggested that the serial-winning former Real Madrid midfielder could have extended at Old Trafford.

It was said that Casemiro could have signed a new United deal if Carrick had been appointed sooner.

The suggestion was that the 34-year-old would have had his minutes managed in order for him to play for longer with measures taken to allow him to play for longer.

Carrick was full of praise for the departing midfielder, he said: “I think he’s been fantastic for us, for me personally, for us as a group.

“I think what he’s given us, I’ve said it before, I think the clarity helps of knowing the situation, and for him to get his head in a place of where you give absolutely everything for, in, in every aspect, knowing, that it was going to come to an end at the end of the season.

“He’s obviously had some ups and downs just like we all have in football and over the years, but to finish so strongly and to see that connection that he’s got with the supporters, it’s really good to see.”
