United are interested in signing Tonali in the summer transfer window, but are expected to face competition for his signature. Arsenal, Manchester City, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are among the others that have been linked with a move for the 26-year-old Italy international.

Juventus are another to have shown interest in Tonali, but a move to Turin is now not expected to happen after the 'Old Lady' failed to secure Champions League qualification.

Luciano Spalletti's side went into their final game against Torino needing to win and hoping results elsewhere went their way to seal a place in Europe's elite competition next season. But Juve couldn't even do their own job, as they threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at local rivals Torino on Sunday.

It meant that Juve finished sixth, behind fifth-place Milan and Como in the fourth and final Champions League spot, and will now therefore play in the Europa League next season.

With that, Juve's hopes of tempting Tonali to move to the club have all-but ended. Reports had surfaced last week that Juve would need Champions League football to tempt him back to Italy, but, as the Old Lady haven't been able to qualify for Europe's premier competition, they are expected to miss out on Tonali.

As Juve are poised to now be out of the race - alongside former club AC Milan - it gives United a huge boost to attempt to get a deal across the line. The Reds can offer Tonali a place in the Champions League and most likely a spot straight into the starting XI with Michael Carrick's side needing to replace Casemiro.

United want to sign at least two central midfielders this summer, as they cope with Casemiro's exit and the strain of having more matches next season. Atalanta's Ederson is among the others United want and talkSPORT have claimed that the Reds have reached a 'verbal agreement' to sign the Brazilian on a five-year contract.

Ederson has been long linked with a move to United and it appears a deal could get done this summer. Negotiations between United and Atalanta are advancing on a potential £43million transfer.

Nottingham Forest's Elliott Anderson, West Ham's Mateus Fernandes and Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni have also been tipped to move to Old Trafford as United look to strengthen their squad.

It's expected to be a busy summer for those at United, as they prepare for a return to the Champions League following a three-year hiatus.
