Jones has recently returned to Rockliffe after a short break following his involvement at the World Cup with Canada. He didn’t play a single minute in the tournament, however, after picking up a hamstring injury that means he’s as yet unable to train with Boro either.

Joseph, meanwhile, is a recent arrival at Boro from Hull City. A deal was renegotiated with the Tigers for the versatile striker after an initial complication, with Boro aware he was still rehabbing from ankle surgery after suffering an injury in the play-off semi final in May.

Offering a positive update after Boro’s friendly draw with Celtic, Hellberg said: “Kyle will be about one and a half weeks away from training with the group. I think it will be around that. Two weeks, maybe. I’m not a doctor, of course, but around that is what we think.

“That will be good because he can start doing things with us, and that will be interesting. From there, we can assess and see when he is fully fit and ready to go 100%. But he’s getting closer to being with us, and I’m looking forward to that.”

Jones’ recovery timeframe is similar. The centre-back made the Canada squad despite an ankle injury that ruled him out from December. He managed two 20-minute cameos in friendly matches, but then suffered the hamstring issue which resulted in him not featuring during the actual World Cup, though he was back on the bench for Canada’s round of 16 elimination.

On Jones’ return, Hellberg continued: “He’s back with us. He had a minor thing from the World Cup, but he’s come back and has trained well.

“He’s not training with the team, yet, but I think he is similar to Kyle - maybe one or two weeks away from getting involved with the team sessions.

“When you first start the team training sessions you’re maybe 25-50%, and then it’s a case of working you back up to 100%. So we’ll see for both how long that takes. I look forward to that.

“I had him for only five games last season - we won four and lost just one. I think he was absolutely brilliant, and it became a tough period after he got injured because we became short on centre-backs.

“He’s a brilliant player, a brilliant person, and we really missed him. I’m looking forward to having him back.”

The two-week timeframe puts the duo in contention to return to training roughly around Boro’s last friendly of the summer against Espanyol.

While the duo will be unlikely to feature much, if at all, in that game, the Carabao Cup first-round clash with Wrexham six days later could be a more realistic possibility.

Middlesbrough are preparing for a big summer as they look to rebuild from the heartarche of missing out on promotion to the Premier League.
