There has been an argument around the St James' Park that Newcastle would not need to push beyond 65,000 seats if they built a new stadium.

However, after being handed a list of 50,000 applicants to be on the season ticket waiting list, to go with the club's current 35,000 existing season ticket holders, the task of keeping everybody happy will be a tough one.

A Newcastle statement read today: "Fans have given an incredible response to the Season Ticket Waiting List, with almost 50,000 signups since its launch earlier this summer.

"An unprecedented demand for tickets has seen fans from across the world pledge their support by signing up to the waiting list; an initiative driven by the collaborative work of the Fan Advisory Board and club officials.

"Ensuring tickets remain available for the upcoming season, 250 lucky fans will receive notification this week that they have been successful in their application. Meanwhile, others who have logged their interest, and continue to be a Mags Member, will enter a tiered list to gain access to future season tickets."

Commenting on the historic demand, Chief Operating Officer Brad Miller, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the sheer volume of fans logging their interest to gain access to tickets.

“Not only does this show the incredible levels of support we are fortunate to have, but it highlights the immense size and potential of this football club. This demand shows exactly why we needed a structured waiting list to give supporters transparency and fair access to tickets.

"We must also extend our appreciation to our Fan Advisory Board for helping to drive this important piece of work.”

Chairman of the Fan Advisory Board, Michael McCarthy, added: “The support and demand to purchase season tickets is extraordinary and the number of signups reiterate this. The reaction that we have had from supporter groups and individuals has been brilliant and it’s great that we are now rolling out the Season Ticket Waiting List.

“Congratulations to those who have been successful in securing their tickets for next season and we will continue to listen to fans on ideas for the Season Ticket Waiting List and overall ticketing.”

Supporters called for transparency last year, and a workshop was held for fans to get on to the season ticket waiting list after what appeared to be a closed shop for future generations.

A statement read: "We currently have over 35,000 season ticket holders. This equates to approximately 70% of home fans at a typical Premier League match at St James' Park.

"Of the remaining 30%, the vast majority of these tickets are reserved for our Mags+ and Mags members' ballot. Remaining tickets are allocated to hospitality clients, club and competition delegates and commercial partners."
