And while that is a bitter blow for the Three Lions and Livramento on a personal level, it is a welcome relief that the 23-year-old's recovery will not eat too much into pre-season.

Livramento had been preparing to face Croatia in England's World Cup opener this evening but has now been replaced in Tuchel's squad by Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah.

Newcastle are due to return for pre-season training on Monday, July 13, and should Livramento's recovery timeline follow Tuchel's revelation, he should only be unavailable around the first week of their preparations ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, which will be a welcome boost for Magpies head coach Eddie Howe amid fears the player could be set for another extended spell on the sidelines.

"Tino was, of course, very disappointed and very sad,” the England boss said. "All of us were. It was kind of a little shock in training. When he stopped training, he straight away had the feeling that this can be an injury that cost him the tournament and he was unfortunately right.

"After assessment, we got the information that it’s an injury of about four or five weeks, which is unfortunately too long to keep on like rebuilding and reintegrating him into the squad, so we took the decision to send him home.

"He was, of course, disappointed and so were we. He was a key player, in good shape and available for both sides for us as a full-back. We called Trevoh Chalobah because then we free up Jarell Quansah as full-back on both sides and Djed Spence can play both sides as full-back, so Trevoh comes as a centre back alternative and gives us full coverage in the back four."

Livramento's injury was the latest setback in an injury ravaged 2025/26 season that saw him feature in just 26 of Newcastle's 58 matches across all competitions.

The former Southampton and Chelsea defender will hope to put that behind him next season and shake off the injury prone tag that is beginning to be associated with him.

Livramento has two years left on his contract at Newcastle and has been linked with moves to Arsenal and Manchester City although it is believed his fitness issues this season have left both clubs with reservations over his robustness.
