Clement labelled a capital surrender in front of the 2,000 strong travelling support as a ‘wake up call’ in a sorry defeat capped by Jose Cordoba’s dismissal.

Norwich’s surge under the Belgian to finish inside the top 10 last season raised expectations of a serious promotion push, but City have suffered back-to-back opening league defeats.

“I didn't see this coming until now," he admitted. "Maybe the first half against Birmingham, when we first started, but it's a really big wake up call I think for all the team.

“Maybe there's been too much positivity around the team before this season and about their qualities, but we talked about that a few times the last couple of weeks, and also before this game, because we know what Millwall is about.

Some of the away support directed their frustration towards Clement and the players at the final whistle after an abject display.

“I understand, but we need to show also our respect,” he said. “So, for all these people who came here, we had also a young boy even coming on his bike for 120 miles for charity.

“So that's why all the players and all the staff went to the fans. Also, I think it's a really, really important thing that we keep on doing that.

“But we want to give the fans much more than what we've shown here. All of us.

“We were bullied on the duels, second balls, also, when they pressed us, we were not brave enough on the ball. It could have been worse than 1-0 at half-time. We need to be honest about that.

“So I expected a reaction. We talked about reaction. Second half, it was there. We were braver on the ball.

“We created things again, and you find your way back in the game, but then you get a second goal, you get a red card, and that makes things more complicated, of course.

“And then in the end, you lose the game because Millwall deserved to win, but I'm disappointed that we didn't show our best face.”
