# Ex-Premier League stopper tips City to be in promotion mix

Asmir Begovic believes Norwich City have the quality to challenge at the top end of the Championship if they can rediscover the momentum required to turn encouraging performances into consistent results.

Following Philippe Clement’s arrival last November, the Belgian transformed the Canaries’ fortunes, taking them from the 23rd best-performing team in the Championship to the fifth best over his first 31 games, collecting 56 points in the process.

That form led to widespread optimism among supporters and pundits alike heading into this season, fuelled further by some shrewd transfer business and the retention of their key playing assets.

While the City boss would have hoped to take more points from the opening five games, Saturday’s win at Bramall Lane helped ease some of the frustration following three defeats in their first four outings.

The performances, though, have been encouraging, with a lack of clinical edge and key refereeing decisions going against them both contributing to points being dropped during the opening weeks.

Now the challenge is to turn those performances into consistent results and give themselves a platform to compete at the top end of the division by the end of the campaign.

Well-travelled former goalkeeper Begovic is backing the Canaries under Clement to do just that, joining ex-professionals including Aaron McLean, Tony Pulis and Kevin Phillips in tipping City to be in the promotion mix.

“The extended play-offs have drawn everyone in, giving teams more hope and expectation to reach those positions. Norwich should be no different,” the former shot-stopper told Hajper.

“They are an established football club and were incredibly impressive in the second half of last season under Philippe Clement.

“If they can get that momentum back in this new season and keep pushing, they will find the level of consistency needed, and that’s what the Championship is all about.

“Putting in performances week in, week out is difficult, but it's the most important thing. I expect Norwich to be in the mix; they have the players and the manager to do so.”
