The 22-year-old notched his first goal since January 2026 in the 4-3 defeat at the Riverside after foot injuries halted his impressive breakthrough at Carrow Road.

Mo Toure has picked up the goalscoring mantle, while Mathias Kvistgaarden has also started the new season well, but Makama’s all-round game adds another dimension.

“It’s not only about scoring,” said Clement, after the forward’s clinical strike at Middlesbrough.

“It’s also about keeping balls and being available, and being that high support that the team needs in moments for sure against really good teams like Middlesbrough, who is pressing a lot of times one on one. You need to find somebody up front who can keep a ball and you can turn forward.

"So no, really pleased about that, and it’s now bringing him back step by step without making mistakes that he can have a drawback. So that’s important also.

“It’s important in this league to have that kind of profile in your squad. I’m also happy what Mo showed, of course, the last couple of weeks. I’m happy what Matty showed the last couple of weeks.

"It will be impossible to have them every time in the selection, all of them, and the same for the wingers, same for the full backs, same for the midfield, same for the centre backs. That’s part of striving to be a successful club, and for the moment the team is doing that really well.”

City have now had 11 different goalscorers already this season, after Makama and Jacob Wright notched on Teesside.

“We’ve been working really hard with all the club on that, with the players, with the recruitment team, to get the right profiles in,” said Clement.

“You see Papa (Amadou Diallo) scored after being so long out recently. Oscar (Schwartau) also with a really good goal in (the Birmingham game). We know he can do that because he scored one like that at West Brom last season. Andre (Brooks) also since he arrived.

"You need that threat and also the players on the bench to come on and to give the energy and the quality to the team again.

"Difficult decisions for me with more players pushing towards starting positions, but I think it’s only positive for the club. And that’s what I want also - to have difficult choices to make.”
