# Transfer interest good news for City trading model

Norwich City’s player trading model could bank a multi-million pound payout this summer.

The Canaries are in the market for targeted additions to bolster Philippe Clement’s bid for a Championship promotion push.

But a trio of former City attackers have been touted with potential big-money moves that would mean extra funds for the Carrow Road coffers.

Norwich's sporting director Ben Knapper has made it clear investment in the squad is tied to a successful selling strategy, alongside increasing off-the-field commerical revenues, under the ownership of Mark Attanasio and Norfolk Holdings.

Borja Sainz departed Norfolk 12 months ago in an initial £11.5m move to Porto, which included a contractual £86m release clause. The Spanish winger ended the season as a Portuguese title winner, with eight goal contributions in 30 Liga appearances.

That has seen Sainz’s transfer value increase to a reported £17m, amid fresh links with first club Athletic Bilbao, who were strongly tipped with a move for the 25-year-old in the closing stages of his Norwich spell.

City officials negotiated a 20pc sell on clause, which remains intact despite the original deal containing a time-limited window for Porto to reduce that figure by half if they paid £1.3m last season.

Porto confirmed the existence of the sell on reduction option in October 2025, which expired at the end of Sainz’s debut campaign, but the clause is not believed to have been exercised.

City also retain a similar sell on from the 2024 departure of Gabriel Sara to Galatasaray. The high class attacking midfielder has since won two Turkish titles, and his eyecatching outings in the Champions League earned him a first Brazilian cap prior to the World Cup.

That showreel has seen the £30m-rated midfielder touted with summer interest from Europa League winners Aston Villa.

Jonathan Rowe’s stand out performance earlier in the same competition against Villa, for Bologna, has also fuelled Premier League speculation around the former City academy winger.

His Serie A club are reportedly open to offers this window for the £43m-rated England U21 European champion.

City sold Rowe to Marseilles in 2024 for an initial £14m but are entitled to a percentage of all future international transfers while he is still under contract, as per the terms of Fifa’s ‘solidarity’ payments for training clubs between the ages of 12 to 23. Rowe progressed through the Canaries’ academy from the age of 11.

But there will be no summer transfer windfall for Norwich if Christos Tzolis departs Club Bruges. The Greek international has had a prolific spell since a wretched time at Carrow Road, producing 122 goal contributions in 145 senior appearances, and is now being strongly linked with newly-crowned Premier League champions Arsenal.

City cut their losses on £35m-rated Tzolis in 2024, when Fortuna Dusseldorf exercised a £3m buy option following a productive loan, with a further small sell on fee due to the Canaries when the Greek later moved to Belgium.
