# Wright happy to become adaptable piece in Clement’s City jigsaw

A more advanced midfield role under Philippe Clement provided a steep learning curve for Jacob Wright, but he is confident he can make an impact in any position next season.

The 20-year-old initially impressed in a deeper-lying midfield role during his loan stint from Manchester City, but his first permanent year in Norfolk brought a positional shift and fresh demands.

After his arrival in November, Clement predominantly deployed Wright higher up the pitch behind the striker, settling on a midfield axis of Pelle Mattsson and Kenny McLean.

Looking ahead to a new season with a clean slate, Wright is confident he can make an impact wherever he is called upon in the Championship for the Canaries.

"I'd played there a little bit, but it was pretty new to me. I was definitely learning on the job, but it was a position that I really enjoyed. I think towards the end, when I got to grips and became more comfortable with it, I definitely enjoyed it a lot more and started to cherish playing in that position.

"I don't really have a preference. I think I can influence games playing higher, and I think I can dictate games playing deeper," Wright said.

"It doesn't make a difference. Wherever the manager sees me as a best fit, that's where I'll play, and I'll do my best for the team."

Wright is part of a strong midfield unit alongside Mattsson and McLean, as well as new permanent addition Sam Field, Liam Gibbs and Mirko Topic, creating fierce competition for places heading into the new campaign.

Even in the number 10 role, Wright faces competition from Paris Maghoma, Anis Ben Slimane and Oscar Schwartau for a regular starting berth.

But it is a challenge the midfielder is relishing as he looks to seize his opportunity during pre-season.

"Competition is part of football. It comes with the territory and I'm embracing that. It's a challenge that I came here for, to come and compete for game time," he said.

"Kenny's the captain of the club. He's an excellent player, and he's given me plenty to learn from. Definitely last season, I learned a lot from him.

"But I want to play as well. We're competing for spots, and that's what I'm here to do."
