Nottingham Forest will consider “a range of potential construction approaches” for the redevelopment of the City Ground.

Last month, the Reds got the green light from Rushcliffe Borough Council to push ahead with plans to increase the capacity of their stadium. Approval was granted for the first phase of the project, to increase the total number of seats from 31,000 to 45,000, while outline approval was given for the second phase involving taking the ground up to 52,000 capacity.

Before Forest’s vision can be realised, there are still hurdles to be overcome as the planning permission is subject to a range of conditions being met. Work cannot even begin until the club have set out how the crowd flow of thousands of additional supporters will be managed.

In the meantime, Forest say they are satisfied with the progress to date and work continues to take place behind the scenes. In an update provided at the first Fan Advisory Board (FAB) meeting of the season, which took place earlier this month, the club indicated a desire to minimise any reduction in capacity when the redevelopment work does take place.

In a summary of the FAB meeting published by the Reds, they said: “Club chairman Nicholas Randall KC provided an update on the City Ground redevelopment following last month’s successful planning committee meeting at Rushcliffe Borough Council (RBC).

“The club confirmed that discussions remain ongoing and that further details cannot yet be shared publicly. The club expressed its satisfaction with the progress made to date, with detailed work continuing behind the scenes ahead of a further update in due course.

“The club will continue to work with relevant partner organisations and RBC in relation to the Section 106 agreement. The FAB and wider fanbase will be consulted through an expert consultation group in due course, with January 2027 identified as a likely timeframe.

“The club also confirmed that it is reviewing a range of potential construction approaches, with the aim of minimising any reduction in stadium capacity throughout the redevelopment project.”

The planned makeover of the Reds’ stadium involves extending the Peter Taylor Stand and filling in both corners of the Trent End as phase one of the project. To take the ground up to a capacity of 52,000, the second phase involves overhauling the Brian Clough Stand - but more detailed proposals will need to be submitted before work can begin on that aspect.

Forest first announced plans to improve their stadium in 2019. The plans approved last month differed significantly from the ones given the green light in the summer of 2025.
