Nottingham Forest’s lack of firepower is a “big concern” as they battle to climb the table, according to pundit Steven Gerrard.

With just six goals to their name, the Reds are the lowest scorers nine games into the Premier League campaign. They are yet to find the back of the net at all on home turf, having drawn a blank in five City Ground outings in all competitions.

The issue is not a new one for Forest but if the club hoped spending £45 million on Liam Delap would solve the problem, it hasn’t quite worked out so far. The summer signing from Chelsea has scored once in the Garibaldi to date.

Delap continues to have the trust of head coach Oliver Glasner, who has emphasised the 23-year-old’s relative lack of experience in the top flight. When it comes to alternative options up front, Chris Wood is 34 and is off the back of a serious knee injury while Igor Jesus has missed the last few matches with a calf problem.

Asked about the Reds’ lack of goals, Gerrard told Sky Bet’s The Overlap: “That's the concern. Chris Wood had a couple of hot streaks, but then he got an injury. Taiwo Awoniyi, he's gone to Coventry City.

“Liam Delap has come in for big money and he hasn't really shown that he's the prolific type of finisher. Igor Jesus scores the odd goal here and there, but they're quite sporadic.

“I think they haven't got that guy that's going to get them the goals for the consistent results, so it's a big concern. And I think the way Glasner plays, in terms of that real solid organisation, it's quite restricted.

“I'm just not sure where they're going to get the goals to put the consistent results together. So, from the outside, for me, watch this space there.”

Forest have had no trouble creating chances this term and their average of 16.9 shots per game is second only to Manchester United (18.6). It is their profligacy and wastefulness at the top end of the pitch that has proved costly.

In Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Brentford, for example, Glasner’s side out-shot their opponents by 15 to seven but hit the target only once. In their 1-1 draw at Ipswich Town, the visitors finished with an xG (expected goals) of 2.31 to the Tractor Boys’ 0.46 but had to settle for just a point.

Stats experts Opta put the Reds’ overall xG at 14.3 and suggest they should be third in the table with 15.6 expected points. Instead, the club are 19th with six points and are staring down the barrel of another relegation fight.

After losing to the Bees, Glasner said of his players: “I can't say they've lacked effort. But again, you feel you're controlling the game, you create a few good situations and all of a sudden you're 1-0 down.

“Then the players tried and tried. I think in the first 20 minutes in the second half we just played in their half, and then I could see they're getting nervous, we're crossing and crossing and this and this. But again, if you always make some mistakes - or the same mistakes - in defence, if in too many games you are not able to convert the chances you have, then we have to admit right now it's not good enough.”
