Three defeats on the spin had left Oliver Glasner’s side 19th in the Premier League table prior to kick-off. Performances had been encouraging but it was certainly not the start to the Austrian’s tenure the Reds had been hoping for.

Glasner was at least boosted by the return of talisman Morgan Gibbs-White at Portman Road. The No.10 had missed last weekend’s 1-0 defeat to Arsenal with a muscle issue but got the green light to take on the Tractor Boys.

The England international played his part in a positive start for the visitors, setting up Jair Cunha for an early chance. Gibbs-White’s free-kick in the seventh minute was headed into the path of the Reds defender, who forced a smart save from Christian Walton with an acrobatic effort.

Liam Delap fired wide soon after but it didn’t take long for the visitors to find the breakthrough. When they did, it was courtesy of the wing-back connection as Daniel Munoz set up an unmarked Neco Williams with a terrific cross to the back post. The clinical finish, to give the visitors the lead with 13 minutes gone, was equally impressive.

From past experience, Forest know the pitfalls of not putting games to bed - after all, it was only a fortnight ago they paid the price for not taking their chances against Crystal Palace as they were beaten 3-1 in the capital. Gibbs-White twice went close to doubling his team’s lead on this occasion, bending one effort wide and then having another cleared off the line by Leif Davis. But the hosts had opportunities of their own and eventually punished Glasner’s men for not pressing home their advantage.

Matz Sels had already thwarted Jaden Philogene and Julio Enciso, but the Belgian was then beaten by the latter four minutes before the break. A poor pass back from Nikola Milenkovic was pounced on by the Ipswich man and he coolly slotted the ball in to make it 1-1.

After watching the incident back, the official decided McAtee took a touch to take the ball away from goal so was not denied an obvious goalscoring opportunity. It meant it remained 11 versus 11 but there was certainly an extra spark to proceedings.

The Reds continued to rack up chances, with Murillo, Dan Ndoye, Munoz and Delap all trying their luck. It was proving to be a familiar story for Glasner’s charges, however, as they continued to struggle with putting the ball in the back of the net.

Forest were hit by an injury to Williams in the closing minutes as the Welshman fell awkwardly while trying to keep the ball in. They continued to push for a winner but one would not come. Here’s how Reds reporter Sarah Clapson rated the Forest players at Portman Road…

Matz Sels: Was sold short by Milenkovic for the Tractor Boys’ leveller but could still have dealt with it better. Surely the Belgian should be backing himself to gobble that kind of ball up. Did make some smart saves, though. Rating: 5/10

Jair Cunha: It is not just Forest’s attackers finding it tough to score goals. The Brazilian was so close to getting on the scoresheet with a fine acrobatic effort early on but was denied by a good save. When your luck is not in… Rating: 6/10

Nikola Milenkovic: Gift-wrapped the equaliser for the hosts with a dreadful pass to Sels. The Serbian should be doing better than that. Had been OK up until that point on his return to the starting XI for the first time in more than six weeks. Rating: 5/10

Murillo: No nearly-goal-of-the-season moment this time, but the centre-back did still have opportunities. Like his teammates, though, he just couldn’t get the ball in the back of the net. Tried to get back to stop Enciso for the equaliser, but to no avail. Rating: 6/10

Daniel Munoz: A peach of a cross for the opening goal. Put the ball on a plate for Williams as the full-back union came to the fore. Continued to press forward and tried to find the winner himself with an effort that was blocked. Rating: 7/10

Xaver Schlager: Probably could have been a bit tidier just before the Ipswich equaliser as he got into a bit of a muddle in the middle of the pitch. Industrious as usual, but it’s a spark going forward Forest are in need of at the minute. Rating: 6/10

James McAtee: Diop surely should have seen red when he took out the midfielder. Summed up Forest’s fortunes this season that even that decision didn’t go their way when the referee went to his screen. Put a shift in otherwise. Rating: 6/10

Neco Williams: Marked his 150th Premier League outing with a lovely goal. Took it ever so well after being left in space at the back post. Put in just as much effort as in every other top flight appearance. A real worry for the Reds to see him forced off with injury. Rating: 7/10

Morgan Gibbs-White: Brought up his 150th Premier League appearance for the club but unable to mark it with the three points he would have been eyeing up. Was desperately close to getting a goal in the first half. That last little bit continues to elude Forest as a whole, though. Rating: 6/10

Dan Ndoye: Can’t fault the Switzerland international for the amount of running he does, and that is a big part of why Glasner continues to stick with him. It is just that his end product needs some work, as was the case at Portman Road. Rating: 6/10

Liam Delap: Back on familiar territory and seemed desperate to get a goal. He is yet to rediscover the kind of form he showed for Ipswich, though. Hold-up play was decent and he had a few glimpses, but nothing would go in. Rating: 6/10

Callum Hudson-Odoi (for Ndoye, 69mins): Had a big opportunity in the closing minutes but sent his effort wide of the far post. Wasn’t the only one to not have his shooting boots with him - as has been a familiar tale. Rating: 6/10

Luca Netz (for Williams, 83mins): Might well be needed in the coming weeks, depending on the severity of Williams’ injury. Did well enough in the closing minutes on this occasion. Rating: 6/10

Chris Wood (for Delap, 90+4mins): Not a great deal the New Zealander could do when he was brought on so late on. Barely got a look-in of goal during his few minutes on the pitch. Rating: 6/10

Subs not used: John, Diomande, Sangare, Kalimuendo, Yates, Aina.
