Xabi Alonso batted away questions about Nottingham Forest's interest in Liam Delap as the Chelsea striker closes in on his exit from Stamford Bridge. Forest are understood to be in talks with Chelsea over a move for the striker who was left out of the squad which faced Fulham last night.

Oliver Glasner is keen to add two more faces to his squad before the window shuts on September 1 with a striker and a wing-back priority targets. Forest have been linked with Delap over recent weeks with the forward set to leave the club following the arrival of Danny Welbeck while Joao Pedro is preferred up front.

Chelsea paid £30m to sign Delap from Ipswich last summer, but he has been unable to stake a regular place in the first team. Forest now stands to benefit from that, although Alonso was guarded when asked about Delap and Forest's interest last night.

"About transfers, personal situations, I am not the one to ask," he said. "I don't know."

Delap played 41 times for the Blues scoring three times last season but made just 12 starts in the Premier League and featured in another 16 games as a substitute.

Speaking about Delap earlier this summer after a match against Western Sydney Wanderers, Alonso praised his efforts in pre-season.

"Every player that is involved is doing well, Liam as well,” he said. "It was 60 minutes when he had to battle hard against the centre-backs, a good few lay offs, so he's doing well and preparing for the season."

Asked whether he believed Delap was struggling with his confidence, Alonso said: "I see him in a good mood, in a good desire to get proper fitness, proper football feeling good, and he's doing well."
