Former Nottingham Forest head coach Vitor Pereira is targeting a return to the Premier League for his next challenge.

Pereira steered the Reds to survival after replacing Sean Dyche at the helm in February. He was axed in the summer as the club turned to Oliver Glasner, who was a free agent after leaving Crystal Palace.

Pereira remains out of work. He has admirers in Turkey and Saudi Arabia but has also been linked with Fulham as Alvaro Arbeloa comes under pressure - and the Portuguese has made clear he wants to manage in England’s top flight again.

"The Premier League is my focus, and I’m preparing as well as I can to come back, because that’s where I want to be,” Pereira told talkSPORT. "It’s where I feel challenged and motivated, and I’m waiting for the opportunity to return.

"Being away from football, I got to spend time with my family and recharge. I stepped outside the bubble a bit, the football bubble. I enjoyed my city, saw my friends, travelled, and just took the chance to switch off for a while.

"Then I got back into studying the game: watching matches and analysing English football, which is the football that excites me the most. So, I’ve been following the Premier League closely, keeping an eye on the teams and trying to understand the current trends in how they play."

Pereira revived Forest’s fortunes when he took charge last term. He oversaw a run to the semi-finals of the Europa League and guided the Reds to a 16th-placed finish in the Premier League, five points clear of the relegation zone.

He had also proved adept at fire-fighting during his spell in charge of Wolverhampton Wanderers. Wolves were in the bottom three when Pereira took charge in December 2024, but finished the season in 16th.

"Fundamentally, I see myself as an experienced coach, with experience gained across different leagues and different contexts,” Pereira said. "I feel I have the ability and the tactical flexibility to adapt to the quality of the players I find when I arrive at a club: to understand their qualities and characteristics, what they feel most comfortable doing, and then build a style of play that’s high-quality and tactically consistent, based on what I find.

"Then it’s about building confidence. Making them believe in what we’re doing and what we’re building together, making them feel that we’re creating something solid and strong as a group.

"Bringing everyone at the club together by giving them responsibility and believing in them, so they truly feel they’re important to the project and to what we’re building. And bringing the fans together, getting them excited with good football, the kind where you can really feel the players are playing with great spirit.

"That’s what I’ve done in my two experiences, at Wolves and at Forest. Both times we came into those clubs, we got results and hit our objectives while playing good football."
