The former promotion-winning Argyle manager returned to Home Park in his new role at a time when he thought they were 'facing a period of significant pressure and uncertainty'.

Argyle were at the bottom of League One after a dreadful run of results and head coach Tom Cleverley was coming in for fierce criticism from many members of the Green Army.

The appointment of 50-year-old Adams as director of football coincided with an upturn in fortunes for the Pilgrims, who soared up the table over the second half of the season and eventually missed out on a play-off place by only two points.

Adams has now reflected on his return to the club which he led to promotion from League Two in the 1996/97 season in a post on the LinkedIn networking platform.

He wrote: "Six months have passed since I returned to Plymouth Argyle FC in a new role as Director of Football.

"My responsibility has been to oversee the men's first-team structure, provide strategic guidance and support to the Board of Directors, Head Coach Tom Cleverley, and Head of Football Operations David Fox, while helping to alleviate pressure around agent negotiations, recruitment, and transfer planning."When I returned, the club was facing a period of significant pressure and uncertainty. Drawing on my experience within the game, I was able to help bring stability, structure, and clarity to key football operations.

"It has been an incredibly rewarding challenge, not only supporting staff in their development and empowering them within their roles, but also witnessing the considerable progress made both on and off the pitch through strong governance, diligent planning, effective cost management, and a clear strategic vision.

"I would like to thank Chairman Simon Hallett, Director Richard Holliday, and CEO Paul Berne for asking me to return to a football club that means so much to me.

"Plymouth Argyle holds a special place in my heart following four memorable years as Men’s First Team Manager, during which we reached the play-off final at Wembley for the first time in 20 years before achieving promotion the following season.

"To Tom, the coaching staff, football operations team, and players - thank you for your commitment, professionalism, and belief in the process. Continue to trust your methods, learn from every experience, and take that momentum into the season ahead.

"Finally, a heartfelt thank you to the Green Army, young and old, for the warm welcome you have given me since my return. Your passion, loyalty, and unwavering support make this club truly unique. There may be countless Uniteds, Citys, and Rovers. But there is only one Argyle."

Adams is currently heavily involved in Argyle's player recruitment for next season and given his strong connections to Scottish football it is no surprise the Pilgrims have been linked with several players from clubs 'north of the border'.

Among the names mentioned have been defenders Henry Fieldson of Queens Park and Dunfermline Athletic's Kieran Ngwenya.
