# Keven Schlotterbeck: Southampton closing in on signing defender

Southampton are closing in on a deal to sign German centre-back Keven Schlotterbeck from Bundesliga side FC Augsburg.

BBC Sport understands that Saints' move for the 29-year-old is not being made with the intention of directly replacing Taylor Harwood-Bellis, who has been linked with a move away in recent weeks.

The club are yet to receive an offer that matches their valuation for Tonda Eckert's vice-captain.

Schlotterbeck has played the entirety of his professional career in Germany and moved to Augsburg in 2024, making 49 appearances and scoring three goals.

He registered two assists in 24 appearances last season as Augsburg finished ninth in the Bundesliga.

Keven Schlotterbeck is the older brother of Borussia Dortmund and Germany international centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck.

It is understood that his arrival could mean Southampton will aim to send 22-year-old Joshua Quarshie out on loan.

In Tuesday night's press conference after Southampton's loss to West Ham in the Carabao Cup, Eckert revealed that Harwood-Bellis had still been training with his team-mates despite missing out on two matchday squads.

"We are having conversations," Eckert said.

"Let's see how the next days go and maybe we will have something to announce, he's been around (the club) but when you're in the middle of negotiations and have the chance to play in the Champions League it's not easy to process.

"He's around and training right now, let's see what the next days will hold for him.

"We know that we need to do something (in the market with incomings) and I'm sure that we will get something done in the days left."
