Leicester City are in talks with former Rangers and Southampton boss Russell Martin over their vacant manager's position.

Martin, 40, has been out of work since being sacked by Scottish Premiership giants Rangers in October.

BBC Radio Leicester understands the club's hierarchy have interviewed Martin as part of an ongoing process to find a replacement for Gary Rowett.

Rowett took charge in February, shortly after a six-point deduction for a breach of profit and sustainability (PSR) rules, and was unable to prevent relegation to League One.

Now, the club are looking for a longer-term appointment as they attempt to rebuild in the third tier, 10 years on from their Premier League triumph.

Martin's time in charge of Rangers came to an abrupt end after just 123 days, making him the shortest-serving manager in the club's history.

He had previously been sacked by Southampton after just one win in 16 Premier League matches following promotion.

But the style in which he led the Saints back to the top tier, including a club-record 25-game unbeaten run and a play-off final win over Leeds United, has led to Leicester putting him high on their shortlist.

The Brighton-born former Scotland defender began his managerial career in 2019 at Milton Keynes Dons and continued at Swansea City, before he joined Southampton in 2023.
