Bae Junho has put himself forward as one the potential saviours of South Korea football after starring in an Asian Games gold medal win - which wins him an exemption from national military service.

Junho, aged 23, was a key figure as South Korea under-23s beat hosts Japan on Saturday to win this title for a fourth consecutive time. He had been an unused player as the senior team played at the World Cup in North America in the summer, receiving a frosty reception back home after being eliminated in the group stage.

The Seoul press is crediting him for helping break down defences with his furiously energetic work in the press as well as his skill over the last coupe of weeks. He was draped in a Stoke City flag as he joined in the celebrations.

Coach Lee Min-sung said: “I am not in a position to comment on Korean football. However, coaches must work harder, and players must display fighting spirit on the field.

“I hope that many talented players among this under-23s squad will advance to the senior national team and serve as a stepping stone to revitalise Korean football.”

The gold medal grants each member of the team an exemption from 18 to 21 months of compulsory national military service before the age of 28, which can be increased to 35 or 37 in rare circumstances. South Korea have won this title three times in a row.

Junho will now fly back to England to join Stoke's preparations for a Championship return at Bolton Wanderers next Saturday.
