Leo Ostigard has joined a small list of former Stoke City players to score at the World Cup after banging in a header for Norway against Iraq.

The 26-year-old centre-half, who spent the first half of 2021/22 at the bet365 Stadium, helped Norway to a 4-1 win in Boston in Group I as he added to a brace from Erling Haaland and an Aymen Hussein own goal.

He came off the bench to meet a Martin Odegaard corner in the 76th minute in what was Norway's first World Cup finals win since 1998.

His celebration involved forming the letter A with his hands as a tribute to heavily pregnant fiancée Aurora Eidmann, who he proposed to before flying out to North America.

"I think the waters almost broke when I scored," he told the Oslo media. "No, she is doing well and of course it is special and painful for me to be here. She has been incredibly strong and I hope that I will see her (by video call) in the next few days here now.

"That goal was for her and the son who is coming. (We have two days off now) and I hope the birth starts one of those days, then I can sit up and be there for the whole thing. That will be great timing.

"I will be there by FaceTime. I'll support her as much as I can. It's the closest I'll get to being there."

Norwegian pundits are debating about whether Ostigard, who plays his club football for Genoa these days, should come into the starting XI for the next game, against Senegal (Tuesday, 2am UK time).

Kristoffer Løkberg said on NRK: "The manager is going to stay with the same back five and give them the benefit of the doubt. Here there were opening nerves - but Ostigard has really given Stale Solbakken a headache."
