The experienced defender endured a frustrating spell at Championship rivals Burnley before joining the Reds on deadline day in the summer transfer window but he has also found opportunities limited at The Racecourse.

Worrall has been restricted to one appearance and it was a forgettable one as Phil Parkinson's side were thrashed 6-0 at West Ham last month.

But having clinched two promotions in his career with Burnley and Nottingham Forest, the 29-year-old admits his motivation is more personal and he wants to play his part in helping Wrexham reach the top flight for the first time in the club's history.

"I think I've got something to prove to myself first and foremost," he said.

"I'm fit and apart from breaking my foot at Burnley in my first three games, I'm not somebody who's spent a lot of time on the treatment table.

"In terms of proving to myself, certainly, but also can I and this club do it? Can they get promoted to the Premier League, whether it be this season, next season or the season after?"

Wrexham secured a record-breaking three successive promotions under Phil Parkinson, but the centre-back recognises the challenge of bridging the gap between the Championship and the top flight, with the Reds only just missing out on the play-offs last season.

"Wrexham have had back-to-back-to-back promotions but the gap between the Championship and the Premier League is big," he said.

“I think the Championship, like last season with Wrexham just missing out, is a hard, relentless league and it's something that I've spent a lot of time playing in and missing out like Wrexham have.

"I missed out on goal difference six or seven years ago with Forest and it does break your heart, but you bounce back from that and I think that's certainly something that we're capable of purely because of the success and history.

"You look at what's gone on at this football club before and it's never been straightforward. It's always been been difficult for them, it's not been smooth sailing, there's been bumps that have been put in the club's way so I think that last season is certainly a learning curve and a step for everybody who's experienced the Championship for the first time.

"Some boys might have taken a step up or down and it's all part of the roller coaster and the ride that is trying to push and get to the top league."
