Guimaraes to Arsenal transfer boost as Newcastle replacement makes key decision

The Gunners are big admirers of the Brazilian international and reports claim they'll test the Magpies resolve with an official bid in the coming days and weeks.

Newcastle are reportedly plotting a move for Botafogo midfielder, Danilo, who is said to prefer a return to the Premier League over joining a domestic rival this summer.

The Magpies are understood to be eyeing the 25-year-old Botafogo midfielder as a potential successor to captain Guimaraes, with the former Nottingham Forest midfielder making a Premier League return his primary objective.

The midfielder was a Forest player between 2023 and 2025 before heading back to his homeland in July of that year, joining Botafogo for a reported £18.6m.

A difficult spell with injuries blighted Danilo's time at the City Ground, and reports indicate the midfielder is eager to return to England, with Palmeiras and Zenit St Petersburg also reportedly monitoring the playmaker.

Newcastle could be facing a substantial midfield overhaul, with Danilo potentially stepping into Guimaraes' boots at St James' Park, should the 28 year old move on.

Speculation surrounding a fresh Arsenal bid for Guimaraes was quashed on Saturday evening, following rumours of a £70m valuation circulating on 23rd July, when the BBC suggested a formal offer was imminent.

However, Newcastle never received a £70m bid, which is precisely why fresh speculation of an £80m approach on Saturday evening left those at St James' Park baffled.

Newcastle have made their position abundantly clear: they have no intention of parting with the player this summer, although the final decision may ultimately rest with Guimaraes and those advising him.

Eddie Howe addressed speculation surrounding a potential Guimaraes exit after Newcastle's 1-1 draw with Gateshead during pre-season. The Magpies manager commented: "I have spoken to him normally as I would do.

"Bruno is a fantastic person and we had some really good conversations before and during the World Cup and after the World Cup.

"What we speak about has to remain private. He is a great player and a great person."

Howe added: "Look I don't know what is going to happen with Bruno's future, that is for other people to speculate about. But also conversations that I'm not part of."

When questioned about potential parallels between Guimaraes' situation and Alexander Isak's transfer speculation from the previous campaign, the Newcastle manager was careful in his response.

"I don't think it's fair to compare situations and what happened previously," Howe stated. "I think you've got to look at it in its own right. Bruno is the captain of our football club.

"He's been an unbelievable player and person all through the time that we've worked together. I speak on behalf of everyone at the football club. We absolutely love him and, of course, everyone would want him to stay."
