Former Aston Villa defender set to stay in Premier League with summer switch
Targett was a popular figure at Villa Park, but the former Southampton left-back was benched as soon as Lucas Digne arrived at Villa from Everton in a £25 million deal and he decided to move away in search of first-team football.
He left Villa for Newcastle United in a reported £15m transfer deal which brought an end to the player's time at Villa.
Targett was a consistent performer since he was purchased from Saints upon promotion to the Premier League back in summer 2019.
However, with then Villa boss Steven Gerrard moving to bring in Digne from Everton that left Targett on the sidelines. He had impressed at Newcastle during a loan spell, and they decided to make his deal permanent.
The defender spent last season on loan at promotion-chasing Middlesbrough, where he played a crucial role in their run to the play-off final.
Targett’s time at Boro ended with defeat to Hull City at Wembley, however, condemning Kim Hellberg’s side to another season in the Championship.
Despite being highly-regarded on Teesside, his Premier League wages would have been a factor in the club not opting to try to sign him on a permanent deal.
