Teary Frank Lampard reflects on

Lancashire Telegraph · By Elliott Jackson

Frank Lampard reflected on a 'special' night for Coventry City at Ewood Park as they secured promotion against Blackburn Rovers.

Ryoya Morishita looked to have put the champagne on ice until Bobby Thomas equalised in front of the 7,000 plus travelling away fans.

That mathematically ensured Coventry will be a Premier League club next season for the first time in 25 years. Lampard was visibly emotional as he teared up speaking to Sky Sports on the pitch after the game.

“I was happy with that one (the equaliser). This is a special night for the football club, which is bigger than all of us," Lampard reflected.

"Amazing, I couldn't believe it when it went in. It's been a hell of a season, a project over the last three seasons.

"It was perfect, they packed the away end out and we gave them the point they needed, we all needed.

"We weren't at our fluid best but the quality of the ball in and the power of the header... We had to see it out and we didn't know whether to attack."

“It can never be more clear when you see the fans at the end of the game," he added.

"A club that’s suffered for 25 years in terms of since they’ve been in the Premier League and that journey going down to League Two.

“Credit to everyone involved in those tough years. Mark Robins, of course, he has to have a shout out. But it’s a massive, massive achievement from everyone involved and it’s really special.

“I wanted to do it away from home a little bit. I know what it’s like to do it this way, it’s the fans that come all the time, away from home. They’re really dedicated fans and they’re having the night of their lives. It’s what we do this job for.”
