Blackburn Rovers told to complete deal for striker who worked with Tony Mowbray

Blackburn Rovers have been touted for a sensational swoop to reunite Tony Mowbray with Ross Stewart.

Rovers are yet to make a new signing this summer, though did make Moussa Baradji's loan permanent. Mowbray has stressed the need to improve the team's goal-scoring record after netting just 42 times last term.

Stewart is a free agent after turning down a new contract at Southampton. The Scotland international worked with Mowbray at Sunderland before being sold to the Saints.

The 29-year-old has a chequered injury record but is undoubtedly one of the better number nine at the level.

Pundit Kevin Phillips is surprised Stewart hasn't been linked and believes a move to Ewood Park could suit all parties.

"I think, from what I’ve been told, I think it’s probably more down to the finances, maybe why he hasn’t been linked there," Phillips told BestBettingSites.

"I'm not sure Blackburn would be able to afford his wages, what he’d be asking for. Nevertheless, they are two people who know each other very, very well. I think he’d do really, really well at Blackburn.

"I’m surprised he hasn’t pitched up anywhere yet, to be honest, so maybe the wages are a bit of a stumbling block. Ross isn’t getting any younger.

"Obviously, with his injury history, clubs ain’t gonna pay probably what he’s asking for, but if he were to go to Blackburn, yeah, I think Tony would get the best out of him, and we know what a quality player he is if you can keep him fit."

Rovers are keen to add goals but it is hard to imagine Stewart would fit into their wage structure, especially after declining a renewal at St Mary's.
