Matias Orozco impressed with his substitute appearance in the second tier as he helped Castellon win 2-0 at home to Albacete.

The Colombian midfielder, 18, was thrown in quickly after arriving on loan from the Seagulls, who had just signed him from Deportivo Cali.

Orozco went on midway through the second half and patrolled effectively ahead of the defence.

He also strode forward to set up two golden chances, the first of them with a brilliant back-heel deep in the Albacete penalty area to wrong-foot the defence.

Castellon head coach Pablo Hernandez, the former Swansea, Leeds and Valencia wideman, was impressed.

He said: “He's very young, but with experience at the highest level in the Colombian league and a lot of potential.

“Maty had very good minutes. He helped the team in what we were looking for.

“At the age of 18, he showed a lot of calm, a lot of personality.

“We hope that this is his minimum level, that we see a lot more from him.

“Maty is a player who is going to help us a lot.”

Castellon are off to a great start with ten points from four games to go top of the early-season table.

On-loan Albion winger Rodrigo Rego, a summer signing from Benfica, has so far gone on as a substitute three times.

His 57th-minute introduction against Albacete gave him his longest appearance to date.

The Castellon off-field staff includes two former Albion coaches in Simon Rusk, who is Hernandez’s assistant, and Jack Stern, who takes care of the goalkeepers.

Albion built a reputation for developing South American talent in but Orozco is arguably the first to come from that supply line in more recent years given that Paraguay midfielder Diego Gomez signed from MLS.

Orozco cost the Seagulls £3.5 million as he signed a five-year contract.
