Tony Harrington to referee Albion’s Coventry City clash

The Cleveland-based official has been placed n charge of the Seagulls’ game at Coventry City on Sunday.

It will be his sixth game of the campaign but only his second in the Premier League.

He had the whistle for Leeds’ 1-1 draw with Brentford and his five games so far this term also include two in the Championship and one each in League One and the Carabao Cup.

He has shown 14 yellow cards and one red in those five fixtures.

That card average is already in line with last season, when he showed 57 yellows and three reds in 18 matches.

Albion fans last saw him midway through the 2024-25 season when they went to promoted Ipswich Town for a midweek game.

He did a good job handling a feisty battle between Jan Paul van Hecke and Liam Delap that night as the Seagulls won 2-0.

The major talking point that night was a yellow card for Joao Pedro's late challenge on Christian Walton when home fans demanded a red.

His track record with Albion goes way back to April, 2014, and a 0-0 draw at Barnsley in the Championship.

He showed an immediate red card to Billy Gilmour at the Amex three seasons ago in a 1-1 draw with Everton.

Harrington’s video assistant will be Peter Bankes, the referee who decided not to award Albion a penalty for what looked like a foul by John McGinn on Ibrahim in the recent 4-0 win.

That was because, while they felt the decision on the field was incorrect, it was not clear and obvious enough to merit intervention.

That is the fine, maybe confusing, line Harrington and Bankes will look to tread as the action gets under way at Coventry.
