Lampard told what he needs to do to save Coventry will be 'killing him inside'

It has been a painful season for the Sky Blues so far, who find themselves rock bottom of the Premier League table after just three games.

An opening night clash with Arsenal was always going to be a tough task to navigate, with City enduring a 3-0 loss in North London.

However, Lampard will have had high expectations as Coventry faced an also newly-promoted Hull City at home the following week. Things ultimately didn't go to plan for the 48-year-old, who oversaw a 1-0 loss to the Tigers.

While Coventry gave a good account of themselves on the road to Manchester City in their most recent outing, another 1-0 loss failed to put any points on the board three games deep into 2026/27.

And with tough clashes against Brighton, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United on the horizon, things could deteriorate further before they start to get better.

However, long-time Premier League manager, Pulis, has urged Lampard not to lose confidence through back-to-back-to-back defeats, explaining how he must carry the flag and set an example for his players and staff.

Talking exclusively with CoventryLive via football betting site Dragon Bet, the 68-year-old said: "The season’s early and they’ve had a couple of difficult games.

"Hull game would have been one that they would definitely have targeted to try and get three points.

"But Hull have started quite well, things have gone well for Hull - I’ve watched games and teams they’ve played against have missed opportunities and missed chances, and Hull have managed to keep three clean sheets which is fabulous.

“The biggest thing with Frank, and I’ve said this for a long time, when you get into the Premiership and you’ve been winning week in, week out in the Championship, the euphoria and everything else is running with you. It’s easy to manage.

"When you go in the Premiership, you’re going to have a run of maybe four, five, six games where you’re not going to pick a point up.

“And what you’ve got to do, you’ve got to manage yourself. And the biggest thing for younger managers, or managers who haven’t managed in the Premiership, is actually to manage their own time.

"They have to be fresh after a defeat, and it kills you as a manager. After a defeat on a weekend, you’ve got to go back in on Monday with your chest puffed out and oozing confidence.

“It might be killing you inside, but you have to show those players and the staff and everybody around that football club that you’ve got the belief you can stay up.

"People ring me and ask me about what my opinion is when they go into the Premier League, and I always say that. You are the leader and you carry the flag, and you can’t have your head round your backside after defeats.

"You’ve got to dust it off. It kills you, and I know it does because I’ve been there, I’ve had the experience, but you really, really have got to dust yourself down, pick that flag back up and get back in there and lead them."

Lampard and Coventry now turn their attention to a tough test against Brighton come Sunday, September 13 at 2pm.
