Former Derby County coach addresses Sheffield Wednesday future - '100 per cent'

Derby Telegraph · Leigh Curtis

Former Derby County coach Matt Hamshaw says he would like to remain at Sheffield Wednesday but admits that could be taken out of his hands once the club appoints a new manager. Hamshaw took charge of Wednesday for last night's 1-1 draw with Cambridge United having been placed in charge on a caretaker basis, a role he fulfilled at Derby after Paul Warne was sacked.

Dave Challinor is the hot favourite to replace Henrik Pedersen who was sacked at the weekend with the former Stockport boss without a club after leaving the Hatters.

Hamshaw also features on the bookies' list as Wednesday sort through the potential candidates in what is the biggest job in League One. While Hamshaw wants to stay, he is not naïve enough to believe that the new man may want to shape his own backroom staff.

Asked whether he wants to remain at Hillsborough, Hamshaw said: "One hundred per cent. I had opportunities at other clubs before I came here. Henrik kind of brought me here, but I'd like to think I'm a club appointment, so I'd like to think I'd stay. However, I'm not naive enough to think that football changes and managers may come in and see it differently. So, look, it is what it is.

"But it's not about me. It's about this club getting the right man in charge, whoever the board of directors feel that may be. Everybody coming together and then hitting our goals and targets that we need to."

Pedersen was sacked after Wednesday lost to Doncaster at the weekend, with a section of the away support making their frustrations clear despite sitting in the top half of the table.

Former Wednesday winger Hamshaw admitted he felt Pedersen may have been given more time and said: "It was a surprise. If I'm being 100 per cent honest, I kind of didn't see it coming.

"I thought it might have been a bit longer, but that's just my personal opinion. So, the board makes a decision. And like I said, look, the owner is fantastic. Michael and David have done unbelievable things already. You’ve only got to look round Hillsborough. I remember coming here last year and there was no running water in the North Stand.

"Where we are now as a football club, and our club's developing, but you can't click your fingers and things instantly happen overnight. We'd all like them to, but it's going to take a little bit of time.”
