Leeds United considering legal action against Leicester over finance breaches

Last week, Everton were told to pay Burnley almost £40million after the Clarets successfully argued that they would have avoided relegation from the Premier League in 2021/22 had the Toffees received their six-point deduction in that corresponding season, and not the later 2023/24 campaign.

Everton, whose CEO is former Leeds chief Angus Kinnear, are appealing the decision made by the Premier League independent disciplinary commission. It is nevertheless seen as a watershed judgement that could lead to other clubs pursuing action against rivals who have also broken finance rules.

As first reported by The Times, Leeds are now exploring whether they themselves have a strong enough case to lodge legal action against Leicester, who were deducted six points last season for breaking cash rules in the 2023/24 campaign.

That year, Leeds lost out on automatic promotion from the Championship, as Leicester won the title. Leeds are also said to be looking at 2022/23 too - the season in which both they and Leicester, now in League One, were relegated from the Premier League.

Separately, United reached an out-of-court settlement with Everton regarding their aforementioned 2022 finance breaches last year. Leeds finished one place and a point behind the Toffees in the 2021/22 campaign but were not relegated.

More generally, the legal landmark win for Burnley has stirred the possibility that other clubs could seek compensation from Manchester City should they be found guilty of breaching the infamous 115 charges of financial wrongdoing levelled against them - allegations they strongly deny.
