Leeds United transfer confidence questioned after 49ers success and misfires

Leeds Live · Isaac Johnson

The stock of the 49ers among the Leeds United fanbase is arguably at its highest point since their takeover three years ago.

A year after the Championship title was sealed, Leeds secured Premier League survival with three games to spare having made the FA Cup semi-final for the first time in 39 years.

Nearly all of last summer’s signings were successful and the decision to stick with Daniel Farke has paid dividends.

Paraag Marathe left supporters widely impressed after his sit-downs with the media earlier this month, following the end of the season. The chairman is delighted with the past 12 months and was optimistic about the future, though made it clear that the next few years are about stability.

He stated that, in part due to the new Squad Cost Ratio rules that are set to initially tighten spending scope, the “approach to the transfer market will once again be strategic and disciplined”.

The 49ers spent £100m on 10 signings last summer and while a similar budget is anticipated for this year, there will likely be fewer signings as higher-quality - and thus more expensive - talents are targeted.

Leeds have managed to source some bargains under the owners, including the £7m arrival of Ethan Ampadu, £3m capture of Ao Tanaka, £5m acquisition of Jayden Bogle and more recently the initial £8m signing of James Justin.

Rival clubs being very much aware of the riches of the Premier League means bargains will be harder to come by going forward. And there is an argument to say that Leeds need to be looking at more sure-fire options anyway.

Not all of the signings made under the 49ers have been successes. The most obvious recent examples are Lucas Perri and loanee Facundo Buonanotte while Isaac Schmidt has also underwhelmed.

But these are few and far between and the likes of Joe Rodon, Anton Stach and Gabriel Gudmundsson have prime examples of how the club’s data-infused scouting model is bearing fruit.

With this success in mind, countered against Marathe’s recent comments and the new finance rules set to come in, do you have confidence in the 49ers’ ability to carry out a successful recruitment drive this summer? Vote in our poll below.
