Jannik Vestergaard leaves Leicester City as mutual agreement reached on contract

Leicester Mercury · Josh Holland

The 33-year-old hasn't been part of City's pre-season preparations this summer and had been in talks with the club about leaving. He joined from Southampton under Brendan Rodgers, costing around £15million.

Vestergaard played 118 times for the Foxes and was an instrumental part in their promotion to the Premier League in 2024. However, he suffered three relegations in five seasons at the club.

After falling out of favour under Ruud van Nistelrooy and then Marti Cifuentes, Vestergaard has now left City with one year left on his contract. A clubs statement read: "We can confirm that a mutual agreement has been reached between Leicester City and Jannik Vestergaard for the termination of the player’s contract.

"The Denmark international leaves after almost five years at King Power Stadium, having joined from Southampton in August 2021. He made 118 appearances for us in all competitions and was part of the squad that won the Sky Bet Championship title in 2023/24.

"We wish Jannik well with the next step in his career."

Vestergaard's exit is likely to be the first of several centre-back transfers this summer. Wout Faes is expected to depart after returning from his loan spell while Ben Nelson and Caleb Okoli have interest from Europe.

It's crunch time for Leicester City as they face a serious rebuilding process in League One. The transfer window is open and we will see players heading in and out of the King Power turnstiles.
