Leicester City's dream transfer week: Five exits and three signings made

City have signed nine players so far this summer, but more will follow between now and next Tuesday. Martin confirmed post-match over the weekend that three or three could be in the building, with centre-back an obvious priority.

While Martin and his players will be working to improve their performances at Seagrave, Leicester's recruitment team of James McCarron, Jon Rudkin and Martyn Glover will be working behind the scenes to give the City boss what he needs.

To get it, it's a simple one-two punch.

Centre-back was already Leicester's priority before Burton came to the King Power Stadium and won, but the performance of Harry Souttar and Caleb Okoli has made the need for reinforcements even more pressing.

It's an area that City haven't done any business in so far, mainly due to their focus on building a brand new attack. Ben Nelson's ACL injury meant it was moved to the top of the transfer list and the start of the season has pinned it there.

Martin told LeicestershireLive previously that one centre-back would come to the club this summer and following the loss to Burton, hinted that "three or four" players will be signed.

John Souttar has been tipped to reunite with the City boss from Rangers. There are also a number of free agents available who could be signed without a transfer fee. The dream scenario would be that a player comes in today and can feature in some fashion at Ipswich Town.

But the tight turnaround means it's more likely that the new centre-back will be signed and through the door for MK Dons. They can't stop there, though. Wout Faes' exit needs wrapping-up, otherwise, the defensive problems on the pitch will only lead to more calls for Faes to be brought back into the fold.

Two defenders need to come in, at a minimum.

Three or four new signings is what Martin said over the weekend and if two centre-backs are signed, that leaves two more new players to come in. There will be differing opinions over where Leicester should strengthen next, but two areas stand out to me: defensive midfield and centre-forward.

Oliver Skipp, whose future will be discussed below, will serve a three-match ban for his red card against Burton and the immediate replacement is obvious. Even if the ex-Spurs man stays at the King Power Stadium, there is an argument that City need to bring a No.6 in to sit in front of the backline.

Players like George Dobson at Wrexham, who was linked with a move to Sheffield Wednesday earlier this summer, and Luke Cundle at Millwall could be the type of profile they look at. Loan moves haven't been ruled out in this position, unlike at centre-back, so Premier League youngsters are a possibility.

In attack, despite Martin insisting he's happy with Admir Bristric, Liam Cullen and Bobby De Cordova-Reid, Leicester need a centre-forward to compete. Cullen looks like his strongest role in this Leicester team is behind the centre-forward and the Foxes manager has said before that he wants three strikers who could do different things.

With Bristric and Reid not offering the sort of physical presence Martin was referring to when discussing getting on the end of crosses, Leicester could benefit from a more traditional centre-forward.

The 28-year-old came off the bench in Wrexham's first two games of the season, playing no more than 18 minutes, before not being used against Watford on Saturday. Reports this weekend have claimed that the big-spenders are exploring deals for Femi Azeez and Anis Mehmeti, which could open the door for Keillor-Dunn to move on.

In the first half of last season in League One, the forward scored 13 goals. He's a prolific goalscorer at this level and can play across the frontline.

On to outgoings and there are so many players who could still leave the club. The obvious two are Stephy Mavididi and Wout Faes, who remained out of action against Burton. Skipp and Souttar are also still wanted elsewhere, although reports have insisted that City's asking price for the players are viewed as too high.

In a dream world, Mavididi and Faes' exits would be completed this week. Skipp and Souttar departures appear less likely at this stage, but any development in their futures would help shape the final picture of City's squad.

No other player, currently, appears to be close to leaving or have any strong interest. However, loan exits are expected to be sealed in the next week or so, with Riley Carr, Tommy Neale and Stevie Bausor all likely to secure temporary moves away.
