Russell Martin could be facing an unexpected Leicester City decision already

City allowed the ball to get through to striker Matthew Dennis inside five minutes to go 1-0 down, before the second was difficult to comprehend.A ball into City’s half was allowed to bounce by Caleb Okoli and it left Leicester out of shape. The goal could be the easiest Burton will score all season, with Kegs Chauke scoring from a tight angle.

Oliver Skipp’s red card sealed a horrendous opening half hour and left the players on the pitch with a mountain to climb. Despite Wes Burns’ goal before half-time, City were unable to find an equaliser, although they dominated much of the second half.The centre-back issue tops the list of concerns for Martin and Leicester. That looks like it's being dealt with by the arrival of Ilari Kangasniemi, who LeicestershireLive understands is close to becoming City’s 10th signing of the summer.

Other problem areas could also be addressed in the transfer market, but there are some issues Martin can solve internally. Many have called for Luke Thomas to be replaced in starting XI after his slow start to the season, although he was better against Burton than he had been at Notts County.

Oliver Skipp’s red card means he’ll serve a three-match suspension, which means a No.6 will play against Ipswich, MK Dons and Plymouth. Sammy Braybrooke or Hamza Choudhury are the two likeliest replacements, with the former standing out so far.But it is in goal where Martin has a potential selection decision to make. Alex McCarthy has started the first two league games of the season, conceding three goals, after replacing Jakub Stolarczyk following the Carabao Cup win over Northampton Town.

McCarthy caused some nerves at Meadow Lane by rushing out for a throw-in and then slashing a clearance against Ollie Cooper, with the crossbar coming to his rescue. Against Burton, further questions surfaced. Dennis’ goal was a great finish near the centre of goal, with blame falling more on the centre-backs than the goalkeeper.

But Chauke’s finish, from a defensive midfielder who had scored just three senior goals in 122 games, was questionable. Souttar had done well to initially block an effort from Dennis before the ball fell kindly to the onrushing Chauke. The strike came from a wide position and went through McCarthy, who was unable to get down quickly enough to keep it out.

The experienced shot stopper made two saves to deny Charlie Webster at 2-0 and deserves credit for his quick-thinking for Burns’ goal. The concern, though, is that there has been little evidence so far that McCarthy is a better shot-stopper than Stolarczyk.

In pre-season, McCarthy edged last season’s No.1 in regards to playing out from the back. Stolarczyk certainly has improved on that side of things, with it being a weakness last season, but Martin opted for McCarthy.However, if Leicester are going to continue with the trend of giving their opponents a minimum of 13 shots every game, the question is whether Stolarczyk is already in contention to come back in?Speaking on his goalkeeper department in the summer, Martin said: “This thing of captains in football, it’s the same as goalkeepers, there is no set number one.“Someone has the shirt now but you can lose it, the same way the right-back can and the same way the left-back can. So it’s the same as a captain, you have to always lead by example and perform. If not, it might go to someone else.”
