‘He has to adapt’ - Russell Martin sent Leicester City warning

Russell Martin has been told he will need to adapt to League One football if he is to fulfil his objective of promotion with Leicester City this season

Martin was appointed as City's new head coach in June and has been tasked with the simple task of returning the club to the Championship after their relegation last season. The 40-year-old has endured a mixed start in the job, winning just one league game in his opening five.

After drawing to MK Dons and then beating Plymouth Argyle last week, Leicester suffered a humiliating 4-0 home defeat to Oxford United over the weekend. It led to chants from sections of the home fans calling for Martin to be sacked.

City remain the bookmakers' favourite to be promoted out of League One despite sitting 17th in the League One table. However, Martin's former teammate at Norwich City, Sebastian Bassong, believes he should have enough quality in the team to be promoted, but has warned he has to adapt his style of play to be successful.

“Leicester is a massive club for that level, and they have the financial backing and advantage," he told Premier Bet. "That's why Russell's been able to spend a bit of money differently than other clubs at this stage for Leicester.

“I've heard a bit of noise around Russell Martin's style, as there always is, and the main question remains the same, does he have the players to play the style of football he wants?

“It should be enough for them to get straight back up to the Championship, because the financial gap between Leicester City and the other clubs in that league should carry them through.

“Now, that's in theory, the reality on the pitch is totally different. He will have to adapt to that level and get his players going, so it's another big challenge for him. At a big club, if he gets his team firing and up and running, they can build towards a sustained push for promotion.

"I think he's looking for a long-term project rather than just a quick promotion back to the top flight.”
