Isak issues Liverpool statement after being targeted by Newcastle supporters

Isak made his first return to St James' Park on Sunday afternoon since his contentious British record £125million transfer to the Reds last September.

The Sweden international was jeered when he left the team coach to enter the stadium, with his every touch jeered during the game along with a number of X-rated chants being aired by the Toon Army.

The home support also targeted the striker as he left the pitch after the game and when he later boarded the team coach for the trip back to Merseyside.

By contrast, Isak was afforded a warm ovation from the travelling fans following the final whistle having played the full duration for the first time in his Liverpool career.

And posting on social media, the 26-year-old said: "Season kicked off. Thank you for the immense support Reds.

"We go on to the next #ynwa"

Liverpool continue their Premier League season on Saturday with the visit of Nottingham Forest in the first competitive home game for new head coach Andoni Iraola (12.30pm kick-off)
