Liverpool told Newcastle should have received red card after referee review

The Reds snatched a late draw, with Dominik Szoboszlai converting from the spot after Victor Munoz was brought down by Lewis Hall in stoppage time. Anthony Elanga had opened the scoring for Newcastle, leaving Liverpool trailing at the break.

Cody Gakpo later levelled, but Joe Willock quickly restored the hosts' lead. Wissa provided the assist, though, as Sherwood argued, he shouldn't have been on the pitch to create it.

The Congolese was already on a yellow when he appeared to trip Ryan Gravenberch in midfield in the first half. Wissa was initially booked in the 25th minute and later escaped a second booking.

The former Tottenham manager, Sherwood believes the challenge warranted another card. Speaking on Sky Sports' Ref Watch, he said: "It's a second yellow; it's a red card in my opinion."

However, former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher and ex‑Cardiff City striker Jay Bothroyd disagreed, backing Stuart Attwell's on‑field decision.

"A second yellow card carries a bit more weight," Gallagher said. "Would you want me to send you off for that? I don't think so.

"It carries more weight because it's a bigger punishment. It's not a yellow card in its own right. It's not enough to send him off."

Bothroyd then explained: "I don't think that is a red card. Gravenberch does well to go the way that initially Wissa was running but then he goes the other way.

Liverpool were also given a verdict on their stoppage‑time penalty against Newcastle after Hall brought down Munoz in the box. Gallagher suggested Attwell made the correct call.

"I think it's the right decision. I think it's clumsy, catches him with his knee and doesn't get the ball," he continued.

"It's impactful, it's contact, and it's a penalty. I don't think it's soft. He's [Hall] hit him hard."

Sherwood also agreed with the referee's decision, adding: "The ref got it right. He makes contact, and it's never going to get overturned," before Jay Bothroyd stated: "I don't think it's soft. I think it's a poorly timed challenge."

Speaking about the penalty taken by Szoboszlai, Reds head coach Andoni Iraola said: "I think we have not only Dom and Alexander [Isak] – we have more very good specialists.

"Alexis [Mac Allister] also was on the pitch and he's a very good penalty-taker, Cody - we have a lot. But I think Dom showed the level. It's an almost impossible penalty to stop. I was happy obviously because at the end we recovered one point.

"I also think there is a clearer penalty before the Victor one to Victor again, but I think the referee whistles just before, so they cannot give it to you, but I think it was even more clear than the second one. I'm happy also for Victor because he has created problems to his opposition and I think these players from the bench that can alter games are going to be important for us."

Liverpool now turn their attention to their first home game of the season, as they welcome Nottingham Forest to Anfield on Saturday, August 29 (12:30pm).
