Arne Slot can land Klopp's transfer wish for Liverpool as questions remain

It's been a tough campaign for the Reds, who began it as reigning champions, buoyed by heavy investment and high expectations. But their title defence has faded into a disappointing, trophyless anti-climax.

Despite delivering the league title in his debut season less than a year ago, Slot's future at Anfield looks far from secure. Retaining Liverpool's spot in the Champions League would therefore carry major importance.

Not only would it strengthen Slot's position, it would also enhance the club's ability to compete in the transfer market this summer. Ex-Liverpool boss Klopp himself highlighted this reality back in 2023, when the Reds faced a similar battle for qualification.

"It's not helpful [if Liverpool miss out on the top four]," the German said ahead of the run-in that season. "Money always has an impact.

"Of course it is influential... this is a summer where we have to be in the market, definitely. I am sorry that we cannot guarantee the Champions League at this moment but it's not done yet."

Liverpool ultimately finished fifth that year, narrowly missing out on qualification. The consequences were immediate: they failed to land key targets such as Jude Bellingham, who chose to join Real Madrid, and were beaten by Chelsea to the signings of Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia.

That said, the window ended with Liverpool signing Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai - three players who would end up being central to the club's Premier League title triumph in 2024/25.

Slot will be hoping to build on that foundation. Champions League football could once again prove decisive as Liverpool pursue their top targets, including RB Leipzig forward Yan Diomande. With several leading European clubs also circling, the lure of elite continental competition may be the factor that ultimately tips the balance in the race for the Ivorian's signature.

The Dutchman will also be eager to strengthen his squad decisively to avoid a repeat of this season's struggles. After such an underwhelming 2025/26 campaign, Slot is unlikely to be afforded much patience if results falter early in 2026/27, making a sharp, well-executed recruitment strategy essential.

Liverpool face a demanding run-in to close out the season. They travel to face an in-form Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday before hosting Chelsea at Anfield the following weekend. That's followed by a tricky away trip to Aston Villa, before the campaign concludes at home against Brentford.

With no silverware left to fight for, Liverpool's priorities are clear. Securing Champions League qualification is now paramount - with both summer recruitment plans and potentially Arne Slot's future resting on a strong finish.
