'Frustrated' Arne Slot rages at Liverpool decision he can't explain

Liverpool Echo · Ryan Paton

Liverpool defeated the Eagles 3-1 on Saturday afternoon as they moved a step closer to secure Champions League qualification next season.

Injuries to Alisson Becker and Giorgi Mamardashvili meant Slot had to call on his third-choice goalkeeper and the head coach couldn't have been more impressed with his performance.

Woodman made a number of vital stops to keep the Reds ahead and deservedly earned the applause from the Kop at the end of the game.

On the 29-year-old's performance, Arne Slot said: "[This season] we've created a lot of good chances. And the first one the other team has goes in. That is what I cannot say today.

"The moment of the game was the lead-up to the 2-0 where Freddie made a big save, when it would have been 1-1. Those are the margins in the Premier League. Today they were on our side."

Palace did get a goal back in controversial circumstances when Woodman went down with an injury, which allowed Daniel Munoz to put the ball into an empty net.

Slot was in disbelief at the moment as he said: "It's almost impossible because of all things we have experienced this season. You could write a book about it.

"Every time I think there's nothing that can happen anymore that didn't happen yet, but we saw today a goalkeeper on the floor and conceding a goal. The end result is positive that, in a game when we conceded a goal you don't want to concede, we kept on fighting until the end.

"Bad luck we have had many times this season. Usually that ends with us dropping points but not today. That's very positive."

Slot railed against the decision to allow the goal as he said: "Does the referee only stop the game for head injuries?

"The amount of times that players were pretending they were injured and the referee buys into this has become a tactic in football."

The Liverpool boss added: "I think it's time that a referee know who they are refereeing. This same incident happened to us against Manchester United when (Alexis) Mac Allister was on the floor with a head injury. The referee kept playing and we concede a goal.

"The amount of times that a referee stopped the play today - you can feel my big frustration about it.

"The amount of times games have been stopped because players have been pretended to be injured. Then there is a goalkeeper on the floor and the referee doesn’t stop the game. I think he should have stopped the game."

Slot pointed to how it was clear Woodman was not feigning injury and speculated the referee must not have noticed he was down before Munoz put the ball into the net.

He said: "That's the only fair explanation why he didn't stop the game. Otherwise I think he should have stopped the game."

Slot added: "The situation wasn’t difficult. The ball fell 30/40 yards out so that is not a smart tactic to go down on the floor as a goalkeeper if you don't have an injury."
