Millwall release statement after 'ludicrous' decision ahead of cup battle

A late melee in the 4-0 win for Millwall saw both Metcalfe and Josh Sheehan sent off but the home side were informed that the New Den star can face Newcastle tonight. The round three clash kicks off at 8pm and is the first meeting between the two clubs since 1993.

A Millwall statement read: "Millwall Football Club is pleased to confirm that Jenson Metcalfe's red card from Saturday's victory over Bolton Wanderers has been rescinded.

"The midfielder was sent off late on in last weekend's 4-0 success, but has since seen his red card overturned following an appeal, on the grounds of wrongful dismissal.

"Metcalfe will now be available for Tuesday night's Carabao Cup Third Round tie against Newcastle United."

Metcalfe and Sheehan clashed after a rough challenge before being dragged apart and shown a red card.

Millwall boss Alex Neil said: "I thought it was a ludicrous decision - to go straight to red cards. It's a full-blooded sport, it's a bit of handbags. It's disappointing because now we lose Jenson for three games."

Having knocked out London neighbours Queens Park Rangers in the first round and then scraping past Cambridge United in the last round, Newcastle will fancy their chances at the Championship promotion hopefuls.

Indeed, Millwall have 12 injuries as things stand and are far from full strength as they take on Matthias Jaissle's side.

A Millwall statement read: "Alex Neil is still without a number of his squad, however, with Casper De Norre and Josh Coburn now joining the list of Tristan Crama, Alfie Doughty, Mathis Servais, Ryan Leonard, Mihailo Ivanovic, Lukas Jensen and Luke Cundle, who are all currently missing.

"The Lions will assess Kyrell Lisbie before naming the squad to meet The Magpies, with names such Yanis Issoufou and Romain Esse set to feature once more, while a debut awaits for Filip Marschall if selected. Jenson Metcalfe is available for selection after his red card during Saturday's win over Bolton Wanderers was rescinded."
