The Brazilian international was withdrawn from the 1-0 defeat to Arsenal with 15 minutes left, and Howe admitted that he spotted his star skipper walking "gingerly" in the closing stages. Bruno was replaced by Nick Woltemade who was again used as a midfielder despite Newcastle in dire need of a goal in the closing stages against a jittery Arsenal backline.
Howe said after the game: "I think he’s okay, but I don’t know, I’ve not spoken to him directly.
"He’s walking a bit gingerly, but I think that’s to be expected because he’s missed so much football, and today was a big effort from him. I thought he was outstanding."

This was the ex-Lyon star's first start since injuring his hamstring away to Tottenham Hotspur back in February. Bruno also eased fears by saying in the aftermath of the defeat: "I was very tired in the second half.
"It was my worst injury. I was feeling like someone in my family (had died).
"It was a sad moment for me. A tough moment. A very important moment of the season. It was very weird for me to miss so many games. Now I am back and have to find my best level."
Howe was in a sombre mood in his post-game Press conference as he reflected on Newcastle's overall performance - and in fairness it was an improved display. Howe admitted he could not lay into his players despite the defeat at the hands of Arsenal.
The Newcastle head coach said: "We’re closer than we have been. Today’s a big step forward.
"We have to take the positives and step forward in terms of performance and hope and believe that will lead to improved results.
"The disappointing run continues and that’s something we want to stop. Performances always give you hope you’re heading in the right direction. Today I hope will be a turning of the corner for us."
Reflecting on the performance, Bruno added in an interview with Match of the Day: "It was not easy coming here. The game was open, tt reminded me a bit about what we are able to do.
"We have four games to try and qualify for European football next season. I know the fans are very sad.
"We fight, especially today. I know this season has not been good enough. It’s not what the fans deserve. The fires are still there, but we have to show more. It’s not easy to come here, but at least today we showed passion."
