Eddie Howe made bookies favourite to replace Thomas Tuchel as FA make decision

There has been widespread condemnation of Tuchel's tactics as England crashed out of the World Cup on Wednesday night, losing 2-1 to Argentina in a dramatic semi-final.

England led 1-0 thanks to former United star Anthony Gordon's goal, but the winger was replaced with half an hour to play as Tuchel opted to throw on more defenders.

That handed the initiative to Argentina, who levelled through Enzo Fernandez before Lautaro Martinez’s stoppage-time winner meant heartbreak for the Three Lions.

Tuchel had previously been praised for his astute tactics while guiding England through the group stages and knockout rounds to the semi-finals, particularly in the 3-2 win over Mexico at the famous Azteca Stadium.

However, reports today suggest he will continue in his role despite the Argentina defeat, with his contract running until 2028.

That means he is set to say at the helm for England's Nation League games, EURO28 qualifiers and the tournament itself.

That has not stopped speculation over his future in the wake of their World Cup exit, of course, with United boss Howe already 5/2 favourite to become the next permament England manager with Betfair.

He is narrowly ahead of former Man City boss Pep Guardiola, with Mauricio Pochettino and Lee Carsley also listed, as well as a potential shock return for Gareth Southgate.

He endured a tough end to last season, but has been backed by the United hierarchy as the man to lead a new-look Newcastle side, with his skills in developing players and unleashing their potential a key factor in that support.

As things stand, Newcastle appear unlikely to face any interest from England in their head coach for now, although it is a situation they will be keeping a close eye on.
