Following last weekend’s defeat to CA Osasuna, the Canaries rounded off their pre-season programme on Tuesday afternoon with a goalless draw against Cambridge United in a behind-closed-doors clash at Colney.
MK Dons, managed by boyhood Canary Paul Warne, provide City’s first competitive test tomorrow afternoon in the opening round of the cup before their Championship campaign begins next Saturday at home to West Brom.
Clement will be without several frontline options against the Dons, including Ali Ahmed, who faces a prolonged spell on the sidelines after suffering an ACL rupture in his right knee just minutes into his return against Osasuna, with the injury confirmed by the club on Thursday.
The City chief revealed the club are assessing solutions already in the building while exploring the transfer market as they look to plug the gap on the left-hand side of the attack created by Ahmed’s absence.
The devastating blow comes after Kellen Fisher (ankle) and Jovon Makama (foot) had already been ruled out of the early-season action. Both injuries were sustained through contact, with Fisher picking his up in training and Makama suffering his during the friendly against Colchester.
However, Clement offered a positive update on the pair, with Fisher expected to take part in an internal game on Sunday after returning to training this week. Makama has also resumed some individual work.
Lucien Mahovo also sustained a contact setback against Danny Cowley’s U’s, with Clement confirming after the win over St Gallen that the athletic full-back is set for three months on the sidelines with ankle ligament damage.
Pelle Mattsson missed the defeat to Osasuna with a minor hip problem that required an injection, but he has trained all week and is expected to be involved in the squad tomorrow.
Ante Crnac (ACL) marked his long-awaited comeback during the week with a 45-minute outing against Cambridge and will also take part in Sunday's internal game, alongside fellow attacker Papa Amadou Diallo (quad), who has been sidelined since January. Meanwhile, Errol Mundle-Smith (hamstring) is edging his way back to fitness.
Mirko Topic (ACL) is back on the grass doing some light running, but Clement confirmed earlier this week at the fans’ forum that the Serbian remains a long way off. Forsyth (knee) is also still undergoing rehabilitation after more than 18 months out.
The Canaries added left-back Darling Yongwa to their ranks earlier this week after a lengthy pursuit, but the summer arrival needs time to get up to speed after missing all of pre-season and will not be involved against MK Dons.
The League One side travel to Norfolk for the first meeting between the two clubs since August 2011, when they faced each other in the same competition, with the Dons running out 4-0 winners.
Following automatic promotion from League Two last term, the Buckinghamshire outfit have bolstered their squad with a wealth of experience this summer, adding the likes of Dan Barlaser, Ryan Wintle and defender Charlie Goode.
They begin their new campaign away to Oxford United next Saturday, with serial third-tier promotion winner Warne tasked with guiding them towards further success.
